Don bemoans smallholder farmers' inability to access CBN intervention funds

A Professor of Crop Science, Professor Samson Remison, of the Department of Crop Science, Ambrose Alli University, AAU, Ekpoma, Edo State, on Tuesday lamented that smallholder farmers in Nigeria were not able to access the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) interventions in the oil palm sector.
Remison made this known in his keynote address during the ongoing 2021 Seed Meeting, In-house Research Review and Annual South-South REFILS workshop organised by the Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR) in Benin.
“The Anchor Borrowers’ Programme of the Federal Government was launched to provide seeds and cash to farmers to grow crops. The participating Banks working with CBN lend to Anchors at nine percent per annum for onward disbursement to farmers. It appears CBN interventions in the oil sector are discriminatory as CBN interventions were mostly targeted and focused on the big plantation owners with impressive cash flow and better ability to pay back the loan ....

OIL Palm Growers Association of Nigeria, OPGAN, rose from a meeting at the weekend, in Benin, Edo State capital, with a call on the Federal Government to assist in reviving the oil palm sector.
The meeting which held at the Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research, NIFOR, was called to proffer solutions to the dwindling fortune of the oil palm sector in Nigeria.
The association also inaugurated its liaison office in the premises of NIFOR as part of efforts to facilitate the production of oil palm in the country.
Speaking at the town hall meeting, OPGAN, National President, Mr. Joe Onyiuke, said the meeting was to garner support from the Federal Government to revive the oil palm sector. ....

CBN to revive oil palm sector, stop importation – official

Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emiefele, has reiterated the apex bank’s commitment to reviving the oil palm sector with a view to stopping importation of the commodity.
He stated this over the weekend in Benin, Edo state, at a town hall meeting organised by the Oil Palm Growers Association of Nigeria (OPGAN), to proffer solutions to the dwindling fortune of the oil palm sector in Nigeria.
The evevt was held at the Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR), Benin.
Emiefele who was represented at the event by his Special Adviser on Development Finance, Mr. Anthony Ufechukwu, said the CBN is very emphatic about reviving the oil palm sector. ....
