Hundreds of civil society activists participated in a protest vigil against rape in the Blue Nile state capital Ed Damazin on Monday. The action was part of a campaign against gender-based violence, organised by Blue Nile civil society organisations.
Following a gang-rape of a woman (30) north of neighbouring Roseires by five young men during the fasting month of Ramadan, various Blue Nile civil society organisations decided it was time to act and call on the authorities to arrange for adequate interventions for victims of sexual violence. ....

CALOOCAN CITY, May 15 (PIA) The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) today announced the conviction of a woman for human trafficking by a Quezon City Court.
In a 28-page decision rendered by Branch 86, Regional Trial Court of Quezon City on April 7, 2021, the Court sentenced Jenniffer Pestano y Chua a.k.a. Jennylyn to life imprisonment and to pay the fine of P5 million.
The Court also ordered Jennelyn to pay each of the three private complainants P50,000 as moral damages and P50,000 as exemplary damages.
NBI Officer-in-Charge (OIC) Director Eric B. Distor said Pestano and a minor were arrested by agents of NBI-Anti-Violence Against Women and Children Division (NBI-AVAWCD) on September 10, 2019 in Novaliches, Quezon City. ....

NBI arrests 5 persons 'operating an abortion clinic' in Cebu City

Five persons have been arrested for allegedly operating an abortion clinic in Cebu City, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said on Friday, May 7.
NBI Officer-In-Charge Director Eric B. Distor identified those arrested as Joey Paulino Guirigay, Francisca Abatayo Rebamonte, Gloria Dalogdog Gabutin, Meryteissie Pode Rural and Amparo Lumagbas Gemarangan.
Distor said the suspects were arrested during an entrapment operation last April 29 conducted by agents of the NBI’s Central Eastern Visayas Regional Office (NBI-CEVRO) through a help of a poseur client.
In a statement, the NBI said “all the 5 Subjects were presented for Inquest proceedings… for Intentional Abortion penalized under Article 256 in relation to Article 8 (Conspiracy) of the RPC (Revised Penal Code) and in relation to Section 6 of Republic Act No. 10175, otherwise known as the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.” ....

DSWD, partners call for heightened vigilance vs child abuse

THE Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has called for heightened vigilance on incidents of child abuse amid the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) imposed in the National Capital Region (NCR) and its nearby provinces.
The DSWD, which also chairs the Inter-Agency Council Against Child Pornography (IACACP), called on partner-agencies and non-government organizations, as the National Government imposed lockdowns in the NCR and the provinces of Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna and Rizal.
Considering that during ECQ, the possible victim-survivors are locked in with their perpetrators and cannot go outside to seek help, DSWD called on all member agencies to ensure that the hotlines and helplines for abused children remain open and active. ....
