(St. John s Preparatory School) DANVERS, MA When Billy McSheffrey played ice hockey and baseball at Fermi High School in the early 2000s, the team nickname was the Falcons. A decade after his graduation in 2005, he went to work as strength and conditioning coach of the Springfield Falcons, the American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL s Arizona Coyotes. Since Fermi s consolidation with Enfield High School in 2016, the local teams are now known as the Eagles. Coincidentally, McSheffrey s current career stop finds him working with a different group of Eagles, as strength and conditioning coordinator at St. John s Preparatory School, about 20 miles from Boston. ....

(Candace Aleks) ENFIELD, CT For the third time this year, retired Fermi High School wrestling coach Ben Aleks received notification Tuesday that he had been selected to receive recognition for his contributions to the sport. The accolades have grown dramatically in scope, from local to statewide to national, with the latest honor being the highest an individual can achieve: election to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum. Aleks, 73, received a letter at his Somers home from Lee Roy Smith, executive director of the Oklahoma-based hall of fame, informing him he has been chosen for the Lifetime Service to Wrestling Award. (John Zirolli) ENFIELD, CT Today s throwback takes us once again into the pages of John Zirolli s delightful book of photos and stories, entitled I Took a Little Trip to My Hometown. Here we see a mid-1970s cleanup effort by some unidentified Enfield youths at the Hazardville Youth Center, located inside a landmark building which had fallen into serious disrepair: the Hazardville Institute. Built in 1869, the Italian-revival style Institute at various times housed a meeting hall, library, community theater and Grange Hall prior to its use as the youth center. As Enfield Athletic Hall of Fame honoree Bill Cantin recalled in his 2004 induction speech, There was a long, narrow basketball court on the second floor. ....
