The Mine Land Rehabilitation Authority is holding two online community webinars in February to update locals on the implementation of the Latrobe Valley Regional Rehabilitation Strategy.
At the first webinar at 5.30pm on Tuesday, 2 February, the Department of Land Water and Planning (DELWP) will outline work undertaken to guide the use of climate change scenarios for mine rehabilitation. The session will also cover how the Latrobe Valley’s water is managed and users’ water entitlements and rights are protected.
The second webinar at 5.30pm on Tuesday, 9 February, DELWP will explain alternative water sources and the options that may be considered, and why. The Department of Jobs Precincts and Regions will provide an overview on its work identifying non-water and contingency rehabilitation options if sufficient water is not available. ....

Filling the Latrobe Valley’s three open-cut coal mines with vast amounts of water to turn them into “pit lakes” would worsen the ecological health of the ailing Latrobe River system, new documents show.
They also reveal that in the driest future climate scenario, there will be less water available in the “heavily flow-stressed” Latrobe River system by the 2030s than would be needed for minimum environmental flows. ....
