SOUTHEASTERN N.C. Ninety-seven staff and students in New Hanover County Schools tested positive for Covid-19 this week, including 20 individuals at Laney High School. One hundred and five people were assigned to quarantine for exposure within the buildings, according to the
Trask Middle, Murray Middle, Murrayville Elementary and New Hanover High are all reporting five or more cases this week.
In emails, spokespeople for NHCS and New Hanover County stated there are no identified clusters at this time. A cluster is confirmed when health officials determine five or more cases are linked by time or proximity, but Kate Oelslager​, New Hanover County communications and outreach coordinator, said in an email the Covid-19 cases originated through contacts and events outside of the schools. ....

SOUTHEASTERN N.C. After the holiday break, students are returning to classrooms across the tri-county area, slowly but surely.
In New Hanover County, elementary school students have another week of remote instruction before they
return to in-person classes part-time on Jan. 25. The middle and high schoolers returned to school this past Monday under the Plan B model, which allows for two days a week of face-to-face instruction and three days virtual.
Brunswick County Schools
delayed their return to the buildings after clusters were identified on two of its campuses. Students have been learning from home so far this semester. SOUTHEASTERN NC  According to the latest numbers from the state’s Covid-19 dashboard, North Carolina has reached a total of 614,355 Covid-19 cases, with 3,871 people hospitalized and 7,425 deaths. Statewide case counts keep breaking one-day numbers for the second weekend in a row. N.C. Health and Human Services (NCHHS) reported 11,581 on Saturday, Jan. 9, following two days of hitting more than 10,000 cases each day.
New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties also are hitting new highs. All three counties are in the red zone, meaning there is critical viral spread of Covid-19, according to the Covid-19 County Alert System. ....
