Daily Insight: Diagnostics has its day

Tough at the top
It’s one of the biggest public sector jobs so it’s no surprise that candidates for the post of NHS England chief executive will face a gruelling 10 hours of interviews and a full day of psychometric testing.
HSJ has learned that the initial interview will be with senior representatives from Number 10, the Treasury and the Cabinet Office, including Cabinet secretary Simon Case.
The shortlisted candidates will also, separately, be interviewed by those NHS England and Improvement non-executive board members who are not represented on the final panel. The board will conduct these interviews in groups of three – meaning candidates may face at least two interrogations at this stage.

A further, 4,494 positive coronavirus tests were reported to public health institute RIVM in the 24 hours to 10am, Sunday morning, in line with Saturday’s figure and well under the average of 5,479 per day over the past seven days.
The reduction is a drop of 27% compared with a week ago, although the holidays and the rise of self tests and commercial testing centres may also have an impact on the number of regional health board tests being taken.
Nevertheless, the drop means that the number of daily infections is back at the level of two months ago and the RIVM expects the current trend to continue. ‘We are well placed up to the summer,’ RIVM statistician Jaco Wallinga told broadcaster NOS on Saturday.

Three-month curfew generates €9m in fines for the treasury

Dutch police handed out a total of 95,000 fines to people for breaking the curfew during the three months it was in operation.
The fines have generated over €9m for the treasury since the curfew was introduced on January 23 and scrapped at 4.30am on April 28. People caught breaking the curfew without a valid reason could be fined €95.
The curfew was the first in the Netherlands since World War II and the measure, plus the civic unrest that it caused, placed a ‘considerable burden’ on already overstretched police officers, according to a police update.

Curfew was necessary but did not cut hospital admissions, IC chief says

Three months of curfew have not had any effect on the number of coronavirus-related hospital admissions in the Netherlands but the measure was needed to slow the spread of the virus, the head of the Dutch intensive care association has said.
Ernst Kuipers told television talk show
Beau on Wednesday evening that the curfew was an essential but ‘uncontrolled experiment’ which ‘had to be done’.
‘The calculation was that the curfew would reduce hospital admissions by 10%,’ he said. ‘But if you look at how hospital admissions have progressed during the period, you can see no effect through the introduction or the change in the time [from 9pm to 10pm].’

What's up
After an eventful King’s Day, Wednesday marked the day that a number of coronavirus restrictions were relaxed across the Netherlands: shops and terraces opened, the curfew was lifted, and people can now receive two household guests per day.
Dutch catering industry reopened after six months
After being closed for six months, the catering industry was relieved to finally welcome some customers again. While many business owners have made it clear that the partial reopening - combined with the strict rules outlined by the Dutch government - will do little to support their business, welcoming customers back onto terraces is definitely a step in the right direction.

Coronavirus cases drop again, vaccination total reaches 3.2 million

Photo: DutchNews.nl
A total of 6,757 new coronavirus cases were registered with the public health institute RIVM in the 24 hours to Monday morning.
Monday’s total is down 1,497 on Sunday’s reports and below the weekly average. Nevertheless, the average number of cases over the past seven days is up 4% on the previous week.
The health ministry now estimates 3.2 million doses of vaccine have been used since the Dutch campaign started in January. On Monday the first shipment of the single dose Janssen vaccine arrived at the central storage facility in Oss.
Patient coordination chief Ernst Kuipers told reporters on Monday it is crucial to speed up the vaccination rate.

Ministers 'consider coronavirus vaccine rethink' after AstraZeneca chaos

The government will announce if there is to be a change in the vaccination strategy at Tuesday’s press conference, following widespread criticism of the approach to the AstraZeneca vaccine, broadcaster NOS said on Monday evening.
Last week health minister Hugo de Jonge said the Netherlands would stop using the AstraZeneca vaccine on the under 60s because of the risk of developing rare blood clots. But this decision has been slammed by immunologists, hospital chiefs and family doctors – and contravenes the formal advice issued by the European Medicines Agency.
Ernst Kuipers, head of the patient monitoring network LNAZ, said on Monday the government’s decision was ‘incomprehensible’. Doctors too argue that the under 60s should be allowed to decide for themselves whether or not to take the risk.
