Call on WA Government to commit to making tobacco control a priority

Today is World No Tobacco Day. We are using today to call on the WA Government to commit to making tobacco control a priority, with new data revealing that the tough approach on tobacco has saved around four lives a week from death due to lung cancer since 1982.
Our Cancer Prevention and Research Director, Melissa Ledger, said new research conducted by researchers at The Daffodil Centre, the University of Sydney showed thousands of West Australian lives have already been saved and will continue to be saved by a tough approach to tobacco.
“Over the last four decades, Australia has implemented numerous tobacco control initiatives, including tobacco excises, bans on tobacco advertising, smoke-free legislation, plain packaging, point-of-sale legislation, and state and national public education campaigns,” Ms Ledger said. ....

Passengers plunged into quarantine because their flight from Perth ran late could be released early


Passengers abruptly forced into 14 days of hotel quarantine after their flight from Perth was delayed six hours may go home today. 
Virgin Australia flight VA469 to Brisbane was scheduled to take off at 1.40pm on Friday but was stuck on the tarmac with engineering problems.
During those six hours, Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan ordered a three-day lockdown from midnight after a Victorian man tested positive to coronavirus after returning home from his hotel quarantine stay at the Mercure Hotel. 
While the delayed flight was enroute to Brisbane, Queensland declared Perth a Covid-19 hotspot and ordered anyone arriving from the city after midnight on Friday to quarantine in hotel for 14 days. ....
