Carter County School Board and Elizabethton City School Board pass budgets with employee wage increases

ELIZABETHTON â Both the Carter County School Board and the Elizabethton City School Board approved their school system budgets for the 2021-2022 fiscal year on Thursday and both budgets include salary increases for teachers.
Elizabethton Director of Schools Richard VanHuss said the proposed city budget includes an increase of at least 3% for teachers, as well as funding step raise increases. In addition, he said an old salary study made about 15 years ago has finally been implemented which makes the salary schedule more sensible.
VanHuss said the current salary schedule had âno rhyme or reason for the increases in step raises.â He said the revisions will make the raises more understandable and predictable. VanHuss thanked the school systemâs business director, Beth Wilson for remembering the study and suggesting that it be implemented during a year when there was money available to put it in place. Chief Shaw discusses safety rules for Tweetsie Trail

ELIZABETHTON â The coming of spring brings a busy time for the Tweetsie Trail. Lots of bicyclists and pedestrians have returned to the trail, as well as some new users of the trail. With the renewed activity, the Johnson City Press asked Elizabethton Police Chief Jason Shaw to go over the rules of the road for the trail, since much of the trail is inside Elizabeth-tonâs city limits.
âThe Tweetsie Trail is a wonderful asset in our community and it is heavily used, but it does cross some very busy streets,â Shaw said.
He said there is a stop sign on the trail at each intersection with a street or highway. He said the stops signs are there âto signal to the trail user to stop prior to crossing the roadway.â Shaw said that those on the trail âshould make sure they can cross the street safely before attempting to enter the crosswalk, and always keep in mind there are distracted drivers and those that may not be watching out for trail users.â� ....
