CORALVILLE, Iowa (AP) While there were concerns a year ago about progress on the $387 million project to reconfigure the Interstate 80-Interstate 380 interchange, the Iowa Department of Transportation said this month that the massive undertaking is on schedule and on budget.
“A year ago I felt like we were behind overall,” said Hugh Holak, construction engineer with Iowa DOT. “The summer of 2020 was actually a very dry year. They were able to get a lot more work done than I was anticipating.”
Iowa DOT construction manager Linda Narigon said 2019 was a “very, very wet year” and said crews were pulled from the project to build emergency levees to fight flooding on either side of the state. ....

University of Missouri settles lawsuits over knee surgeries involving veterinarian

University of Missouri settles lawsuits over knee surgeries involving veterinarian
The University of Missouri has settled a collection of personal injury and false advertising claims over knee surgeries for $16.2 million, in what appears to be one of its largest public payouts in recent years.
The 22 plaintiffs, a handful of whom were minors, filed suits from 2018 through 2020 over BioJoint surgeries pioneered by two university employees, orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Stannard and veterinarian Dr. James Cook. The procedure involves a complex operation that the Mizzou BioJoint Center s website calls a biological joint restoration, replacing parts of the knee with cadaver bones or cartilage to treat arthritis or joint damage. Some plaintiffs alleged in court documents that the procedure was sold to them as a way to avoid a traditional artificial knee replacement. ....

Micro-Doppler radars could soon used to predict injury risk and track recovery

Micro-Doppler radars could soon be used to predict injury risk and track recovery
Micro-Doppler radars could soon be used in clinical settings to predict injury risk and track recovery progress, according to Penn State researchers.
Being able to view subtle differences in human movement would allow health care workers to more accurately identify individuals who may be at risk for injury and to track progress precisely while individuals are recovering from an injury. In an effort to find an accurate, reliable and cost-effective way to measure these subtleties  in human movement, College of Engineering and College of Medicine researchers teamed up to develop a radar in front of which athlete study-subjects could jump. ....

Study examines the variability in opioid prescriptions for common orthopedic procedures

Study examines the variability in opioid prescriptions for common orthopedic procedures
A new review article published in the March issue of the
Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (JAAOS) examines the variability that exists in opioid prescribing patterns across the United States for many common orthopedic procedures.
While the Northeast and Midwest were most impacted by the opioid epidemic, the study found that patients in the West and South consistently were given prescriptions at or greater than the national medians. These regional and national variations in opioid prescribing practices can serve as a benchmark for orthopedic surgeons to help develop guidelines to reduce excess postoperative opioid prescriptions. ....
