Elaine Brooks has gone almost four years without her daughter, and still the pain and grief are fresh in her mind. Lisa Torry Smith was killed, and her six-year-old son severely injured, when the driver of a car struck them in a crosswalk while she was walking him to school in October 2017. âIt happens when you least expect it,â said Brooks, Smithâs mother. âThatâs why a sudden death like that is so hard to get your arms around, and deal with.
