A refurbished locker room for deputies. A new training facility and high-tech locks and security cameras. A $600,000 conveyer belt to move inmate property from one place to another and new doors throughout.
All those renovations at the El Paso County Jail some of them part of a longstanding wish list  were paid for with federal COVID-19 relief funds.
But it took until November for officials to furnish inmate face coverings inside the jail.
The predictable result was that even as almost $16 million in construction was underway at the jail, inmates and corrections deputies were suffering, unmasked, through the state’s worst jail outbreak. ....

EL PASO COUNTY — Letecia Stauch had a motions hearing Friday, March 12, after deciding to represent herself in her first-degree murder trial. She s the El Paso County woman accused of killing her 11-year-old stepson, Gannon Stauch, in January 2020.
On the same day as the hearing, Gannon s last school unveiled a memorial in his honor. Grand Mountain School now has this wall dedicated to the former student and classmate. The private showing was reserved for family members, but Widefield School District 3 shared these photographs with our Colette Bordelon. El Paso County Sheriff's Office arrests child-exploitation suspect; seeking potential victims


The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is looking for anyone who might have been victimized by a man they arrested on suspicion of sexual exploitation of a child in February, according to a news release.
Mauricio Matestic, 19, was arrested after deputies investigating illegal firearms sales in February found Matestic with “multiple images and videos of child pornography,” officials said.
Matestic was booked into the El Paso County jail, where he remains in custody pending additional charges, the agency said.
“We are actively seeking additional information involving criminal information, including potential unreported incidences involving the suspect,” the release stated.
Matestic likely met some of his victims on Snapchat, officials alleged. ....

El Paso County jail staff, inmates cite lack of masks in COVID-19 outbreak that became one of the largest in the state


Eight months into the pandemic and four months after the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office received up to $15.6 million in COVID-19 relief funds, the county jail became the site of one of the state’s largest coronavirus outbreaks, with staff and inmates stating that they were not given adequate equipment to protect themselves. 
The more than 1,200 inmates that pass through the jail on any given day were not given a mask until the week before last after the virus had infected hundreds of inmates and dozens of deputies. Before the week of Nov. 1, masks were only provided when moving throughout the jail.  ....
