Railroad Museum set to reopen Friday | News, Sports, Jobs

ELKINS The West Virginia Railroad Museum is planning a reopening celebration this weekend, featuring a new exhibit with professional railroad photography.
The museum’s reopening event will run from Friday through Sunday, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.
The new exhibit, entitled “’20 – ’20 Visions: 100 Years of West Virginia Railroading,” is described in a Railroad Museum press release as “an ambitious, insightful, and expansive comparison of West Virginia’s railroad industry in the 1920s, and now, in the 2020s.”
“Come and see how your life is connected to the railroad, and how different that relationship might be if you lived here 100 years ago,” the release reads. ....

Elkins Depot Welcome Center discussing hosting new events | News, Sports, Jobs

ELKINS Although the doors of the Elkins Depot Welcome Center are still closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the center’s staff is still helping people through a window and is hard at working trying to map out future plans for the downtown facility.
“We are open right now, but only through a window,” Anne Beardslee, executive director of the Elkins Depot Welcome Center CVB, told The Inter-Mountain Friday. “We’ve been open since last July and we’ve been helping people at a window on the track side and we provide them with every single thing they would get if they came inside.” ....

During the January meeting of the Highlands Trail Foundation two new members, Sam England and Steven Leyh, were elected to serve on its Board of Directors and AmeriCorp Jessica Black was introduced.
England is well known for his extensive work with West Virginia State Parks spanning a 40-year career that started in 1977 at Twin Falls State Park and culminated with his appointment in 2014 as Chief of West Virginia State Parks & Recreation Section of the DNR.
In 2019, he retired for a short while before accepting his current position as general manager at Canaan Valley Resort.
England states, “My life-long love of fishing, hiking, and camping along with outdoor experiences I shared with my family was instrumental in my career path.” ....

Ramps and Rails Festival canceled | News, Sports, Jobs

ELKINS The 2021 Annual Ramps and Rail Festival is the latest event to be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The decision to cancel the festival, which has become a tradition in the Elkins Town Square, was based on the uncertainties of COVID-19 and public gatherings in the near future, officials said.
“This was not an easy decision because we know that people depend on the festival for income, entertainment and community connection,” Anne Beardslee, executive director of the Elkins Depot Welcome Center CVB, said Friday.
“To have the festival in April, all the decisions, invitations, booking of bands, vendor registration and arranging for required services need to take place now. We do not know what social distancing will be required in April, how many people will be allowed to attend and have been fully vaccinated, if we would have to limit vendors, etc. ....

Commission to hear presentations | News, Sports, Jobs

ELKINS Two presentations are part of the agenda for Thursday’s Randolph County Commission meeting at the James Cain Courthouse Annex.
The Elkins Depot Welcome Center and Elkins High School Project Safe Graduation will both present to the commission during the meeting, which is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Both organizations come before the commission each year around this time to provide information.
The Welcome Center, which is a non-profit, volunteer-based organization that serves visitors and community members in Elkins and Randolph County, will be there to give their yearly report to the commission.
“They do a presentation every year just to let us know what’s going on,” Commission President Mark Scott said. “They want to show us the progress they’ve made and what they’ve been working on.” ....
