Criminal proceedings against 12 accused
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) India has accepted the action taken by the authorities concerned and the ex-gratia of ₹ 1 crore paid to the families of the 12 people who died in the tragic styrene gas leak incident in LG Polymers plant in Visakhapatnam.
The Andhra Pradesh Government has informed the Commission that 485 people were also paid ₹ 1 lakh each who were hospitalised for 2-3 days. It has also informed that criminal proceedings were initiated against the 12 accused.
The Commission had taken suo motu cognizance of media reports about the death of eight persons and over 5,000 others falling sick due to leakage of styrene gas in Vizag district on May 7, 2020. ....

Documents from the union environment ministry and state environment department show that LG Polymers consistently evaded getting an environmental clearance for the factory by filing contradictory information about itself and taking months to file simple paperwork.
