EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Earlier this week, Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb announced the state’s budget plans, which includes a substantial boost to education in the Hoosier State.
$1.9 billion will be put towards education over the next two years. This figure is projected to boost school funding by 4.5 percent over the course of that same time period.
There are even plans to set the minimum starting salary for teachers at $40,000. ....

Teachers, supporters converge to oppose education funding proposals


EVANSVILLE, Ind.  Dozens of teachers gathered along the Downtown Evansville Riverfront to protest pending legislation that they say would take desperately needed dollars from public schools and instead put them into private schools.
The teachers gathered to protest funding proposals in the Indiana General Assembly that would provide Education Savings Accounts and expand private school voucher programs.  
State and local teachers associations invited colleagues and supporters from districts across southwest Indiana to a Fair Funding Rally at Evansville s Four Freedoms Monument Saturday morning, where speakers said they felt ignored by lawmakers and asked supporters to continue to lobby their representatives for equitable public school funding.  ....

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - The Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation is using grant money to give teachers a bonus for their hard work during the COVID-19 pandemic.
EVSC teachers say they’re grateful for the $1,000 stipend.
Throughout the past year, schools have stayed open, but it hasn’t necessarily been easy to keep it that way.
Representatives from the teachers union say overtime has become a pretty common occurrence. ....

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - A group of local educators are hoping to bring meaning to messages meant for Indiana’s elected leaders.
On Wednesday afternoon, they shared with 14 News that a couple topics continue to be top of mind. One of them is fighting for fair public school funding. The other issue supports contracted hours, which could carve out more time during the day to complete necessary tasks.
One teacher says when she leaves work, she often has to carry work tasks home with her because there is just simply not enough time during the day. ....
