District offers webinars on language program
The Del Mar Union School District has scheduled parent information webinars regarding its Spanish Language Immersion Program in kindergarten and first grade. To apply for the program, parents or guardians must attend one of the webinars. All DMUSD students will have equal access to the Spanish Language Immersion Program via a lottery, regardless of a student’s school of residence. The webinars will include information about long-term goals for the program, research supporting the benefits of biliteracy, the parent commitment requirement, application and enrollment details, and lottery information. ....

Farmer grows millions of pounds of mushrooms

To grow, pick and ship six million pounds of mushrooms each year requires lots of labor, total commitment, and the perfect compost recipe.
“If you make good compost you get lots of mushrooms, said Gary Crouch. “If you don’t make good compost you get no mushrooms.”
Crouch, who was recently named San Diego Farm Bureau Farmer of the Year, is owner of Mountain Meadow Mushroom north of Escondido. He said mushroom farming is like one big ongoing science project where everything has to be done just right.
It’s also very much a business, one that’s getting tougher and tougher to manage in California with all its labor laws and rules, he said. ....

'He Was My Best Friend': Escondido Family Loses Father to COVID-19 – NBC 7 San Diego

His dad, a father of five, died from complications related to COVID-19. Gabriel Lira was only 42-years-old.
Lira was a fast-food worker who dreamed of someday owning his own restaurant. He loved cooking for family and friends.
COVID-19 changed everything.
In early December, Lira’s wife, who also works in the fast-food industry, got the virus. She began quarantining in a bedroom of the family’s Escondido home.
Two of her children also became ill. By Christmas, William said the house felt empty with most of the family distancing themselves to stop the spread. Christmas was the day Gabriel Lira was notified that his COVID-19 test was positive. ....
