New mums aren’t being asked about their mental health at their six-week check, new research reveals, directly contradicting guidelines given to GPs.
A quarter of new mums who’ve given birth in the past 12 months say they were not asked about their emotional or mental health at their six-week GP check-up, according to the survey of nearly 1,000 mothers by the National Childbirth Trust (NCT). This is a huge figure – and could be up to 150,000 new mums in the last year. ....

Six out of seven new mothers in England are not getting a checkup of their health six weeks after giving birth, despite such appointments becoming a new duty on the NHS last year.
Just 15% of women who have recently had a child are having a dedicated consultation with a GP to discuss their physical and mental health, according to a survey by the parenting charity National Childbirth Trust (NCT).
The requirement was introduced last year to boost maternal health and especially to try to identify women having psychological problems linked to childbirth such as postnatal depression. The appointments are separate to the established six-week check of a baby’s progress. ....

Newham project expands BAME pregnancy and maternity support

A community partnership in Newham will help pregnant women and new mums facing challenges and inequalities to access support.

A community partnership will expand the support available for pregnant women and new mums facing financial hardship and disadvantage in Newham.
The project will offer antenatal education, breastfeeding support, counselling and family link services, alongside an existing perinatal peer support service.
It has a strong focus on inclusion and support for women of black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds, who experience significant inequalities in outcomes.
UK parents charity NCT, which has received £471,000 from the government’s health and wellbeing fund, will work with Plaistow-based Alternatives Trust East London, Forest Gate s The Magpie Project and East Ham organisation Compost London. ....
