Athens City Councilmember Beth Clodfelter resigns for regional job with Sen. Sherrod Brown

Athens City Councilmember Beth Clodfelter resigned Monday after being placed on the short list for a regional representative position with U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown’s office, ending her first and only term in office early.
Clodfelter, the second Democrat to resign from Council in recent weeks, said she had undergone since February an “intensive” application process for the job to serve as a liaison for Brown in southeast Ohio, meeting with leaders across 25 counties to take the political temperatures of each and report them back to the office. While Clodfelter hasn’t formally accepted the job yet, she expects employment terms to be finalized in the coming days. ....

Ahead of election, Athens Democrats appoint Ben Ziff to fill City Council vacancy

The Athens city Democratic Central Committee voted unanimously Wednesday to appoint Donkey Coffee manager Ben Ziff to serve at-large on City Council to fill the vacancy left by Pete Kotses, who resigned in recent weeks.
Ziff, who’s never held public office and was the only candidate running in the primary for Kotses’ seat, is expected to occupy office in the coming weeks once paperwork is finalized with the state. He was the sole candidate the committee considered for the job and was viewed by city and party leaders as a favorite in the weeks leading to Wednesday s meeting.
“I’m feeling good. I’m honestly rather overwhelmed, sorry,” Ziff said with laughter in an interview following the meeting. “Not that I wasn’t excited or looking forward to it, but it’s hit me in a much more emotional way than I was expecting.” ....

Where have all the leftist candidates gone?

In January this newspaper reported, “Athens could have its most competitive election season in years, and it would be thanks to Damon Krane.” That’s now unlikely, so an explanation and final appeal are in order.
First off, I wasn’t bluffing. With all eight seats on Athens City Council up for grabs, I encouraged nearly 100 people to run. Seven people expressed serious to moderate interest, and we spent hours talking logistics.
This was a different approach than I took in 2019, when I simply launched my own campaign for mayor. I ended up working closely with council candidates Ellie Hamrick and Chris Monday, but we had not conferred before deciding to run, since we barely knew each other back then. ....

Athens City Councilmember Pete Kotses to resign, ending his final term prematurely

Athens NEWS Associate Editor
Athens City Councilmember Pete Kotses said Monday that he’s resigning at the end of the week, bringing his three-term career as a member of the body to an early close after announcing in January he wouldn’t seek another term.
Kotses, an at-large Democrat, said in an interview that he decided to leave once it became clear that the primary to replace him was uncontested with Ben Ziff, a Donkey Coffee manager, pursuing the Democratic nomination. It’s still possible that Independent candidates could surface in the general election.
Kotses said his life shifted radically in 2020 after closing his bicycle shop, which monopolized much of his time over the years, contributing to his decision to step down from Council. ....
