ACC Leisure Services starts 'Go Beyond' teen program | Arts & Culture


Next fall, Athens teens will get the chance to learn and have fun while on excursions hosted by the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services’ “Go Beyond” program.
The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department will launch its “Go Beyond” program for teens in October 2021. The eight-month program will serve 20 Athens-area teens in grades 6-12, and participants will embark on field trips across North Georgia to a variety of educational and engaging experiences, such as the Civil Rights Museum, Medieval Times and paintballing.
The program, which will be free of charge for participants, is being funded by a $5,120 donation from local law firm Blasingame, Burch, Garrard, and Ashley, P.C. The donation was made in honor of the retirement of two of the firm’s partners, Michael Morris and Thomas Rogers Jr. ....

Free drive-in movie to show at Southeast Clarke Park


On April 9, The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department will host its “Movies by Moonlight” drive-in with free admission.
The movie shown will be “Angels in the Outfield,” to commemorate the major league baseball season. The film is directed by William Dear and stars Danny Glover, Brenda Flicker and Tony Danza. It centers on a boy named Roger, who prays that the California Angels baseball team will win the pennant so that his father will decide to stay with him. And fortunately for Roger, actual angels overhear his prayer, and they decide to help make it happen.
Tickets are currently available on the ACC Leisure Services website. The drive-in will be held at Southeast Clarke Park, along the Lexington Road Side. ....

How COVID-19 has affected Athens theater workers


Monitoring bathrooms for social distancing and sanitizing around the clock are not typical tasks for a spotlight operator. Though for Brooke Friedman, a University of Georgia alum and a spotlight operator at Medieval Times, these tasks are a part of her job due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I will clean an hour before a show starts, then I’ll stay in front of the bathrooms and monitor how many guests are allowed in at one time, just to keep up with COVID safety precautions,” Friedman said. “After that, I’ll go up to my spotlight tower, do all of the technical theater stuff and, then after the show, I monitor the bathrooms again and clean everything again.” ....
