Biomerics Manufacturing officials welcomed Athens leaders to a groundbreaking on a new phase of construction on their property at Athens Industrial Park on Friday.
Travis Sessions, CEO of Biomerics, said he drove in from the company headquarters in Salt Lake City to be part of the event.
Athens is like this little, second place we go to that we just have that warm feeling for, Sessions said.
Sessions said the expansion will be a $3 million investment to add on to what had already been built.
We re investing money, because it s a great investment, because of the work that s been done here by these employees and this community, he said. You created the value. Now the money is coming to support what you ve done. ....

County to replace Fair Park sign

The electronic sign that stands along State Highway 31 at the Henderson County Regional Fair Park Complex is getting a larger, more up to date, replacement.
Fair Park Manager Howard Calloway told Commissioners Court on Tuesday, the new sign will cost about $190,000. At the meeting Commissioners authorized Calloway to apply for a 2021 Community Development Grant through the Athens Economic Development Corporation to pay for part of the sign.
The county is applying a grant of $38,000.
The sign has been up there for about 15 years, Calloway said. Some of the components in it are broken. Some are obsolete and you can t replace them. ....

Athens EDC accepting application for Business Assistance Grant

The Athens Economic Development Corporation is currently accepting applications for its Business Assistance Grant Program and Community Development Grant Program, both are aimed at enhancing the economic vitality of Athens. Deadline to apply for these grants is Monday, Feb. 15.
The Business Assistance Grant Program helps new or existing businesses improve their visual appeal. These grants are for improvements to facades, signs, property, and for demolition.
The Community Development Grants are for cultural, sports, fitness, entertainment and community projects that attract resident and visitor participation and contribute to quality of life, business development and growth of Athens sales tax revenue. Businesses, organizations, and nonprofits are all eligible for these grants. ....
