NEW ULM The New Ulm City Council reviewed recommendations for the next neighborhood park, and accepted the Park and Recreation Commission’s scoring matrix and rankings for it.
The Park and Recreation Commission has studied this topic since 2016 during multiple regular meetings, and most recently three work sessions and a special meeting. A matrix was developed by the commission to rank potential park sites for development. Following the Park Commission meeting Monday, March 8, the highest-scoring parks were Lakeside Village and Upper Cottonwood. The commission believes the city should consider land acquisition and development of neighborhood parks in both areas.

The Park and Recreation Commission identified Lakeside
Village Park as the top priority for neighborhood park
development. Recently, a tax-forfeited land parcel adjacent
to the exiting park became available. The commission recommended
acquiring the parcel to develop a part to serve
the north side of New Ulm.
NEW ULM Lakeside Village and Upper Cottonwood park areas scored the highest on the New Ulm Park and Recreations Commission’s neighborhood park matrix.
As a result of the high scores, the two parks were recommended Monday by the commission as the top priority locations for neighborhood park development.

NEW ULM The Planning Commission joined the conversation about where New Ulm’s next neighborhood park will be located.
The Park and Recreation Commission is currently reviewing existing and proposed park areas within the community and establishing a ranking system for future park acquisition and development efforts.
This process is intended to identify the area in greatest need of a neighborhood park. Park and Recreation Director Tom Schmitz has indicated that a neighborhood park should have three features: a shelter, playground equipment and a field area.
The staff has recommended that the Planning Commission take an active role in this process and identify the top three areas for further development.
