New Douglas County law dog, Cain, is ready to fight crime

After a little more than three months of extensive training, Cain is ready and able to fight crime in Douglas County.
Cain, a dual purpose law dog, is a Belgian Malinois/German shepherd mix and the newest team member of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. He and his handler, Deputy Bob Peper, finished their 520 hours of training and graduated on May 19. ....

A new police dog, K9 Cain, will soon be joining the Douglas County Sheriff s Office. He is replacing Ozzy, who is set to retire this spring. He will be partnered with Ozzy s current handler, Deputy Bob Peper. (Contributed)
A new employee will soon be starting at the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and for Deputy Bob Peper, the news is bittersweet.
Cain, the newest law dog to join the force, will be taking over for Peper’s dog, Ozzy, who has to retire early because of some health issues. Both police dogs are a Belgian Malinois/German shepherd mix and are dual purpose dogs, trained in handler protection, criminal apprehension, building and area searches, evidence recovery, tracking and narcotics detection. ....
