Rocky season for ski hills set for strong finish

THUNDER BAY – It’s been a tough season for ski hill operators, but owners of Thunder Bay’s two ski hills say it’s ending on a high note.
With a lockdown that kept skiers off the slopes for several weeks and unusually low snowfall, Mount Baldy Ski Area co-owner Daniel Kardas wouldn’t exactly call it a banner year.
However, since reopening in February, things have looked up for the business and its clients. Hundreds of people took advantage of mild weather over the weekend to get in some spring rides. ....

THUNDER BAY - While perhaps not as thrilling as racing down a snowy slope, two local ski hills are looking at other winter activities to get people out to enjoy the outdoors during the COVID-19 lockdown.
This weekend, Mount Baldy Ski Area and Loch Lomond Ski Area will be opening up cross-country ski and snowshoe trails and sledding areas.
“The feedback has been amazing. People are psyched,” said Daniel Kardas, co-owner of Mount Baldy Ski Area. “People know the position we are in and people want to come out and support us. The support in Thunder Bay has been mind blowing.” ....

THUNDER BAY Unlike downhill skiers, cross-country skiers will still be able to enjoy their favourite outdoor activity over the coming weeks despite Ontario s stay-at-home order.
Management at the Kamview Ski Area in Thunder Bay was initially worried about Premier Ford s announcement of broadened measures to slow the spread of COVID-19.
We re ecstatic that we can be open, says general manager Dave Suttie. People need something to do. It s a real bonus for people to be able to get out and do some exercise. ....
