Farm exports rose 16.9% in April-Feb. FY21

India exported agricultural commodities worth ₹2.74 lakh crore till February of the 2020-21 fiscal, a 16.9% increase from ₹2.31 lakh crore in the year earlier, notwithstanding the pandemic, the agriculture ministry said on Wednesday.
Similarly, imports of agriculture and allied commodities increased by 3% to ₹1,41,034 crore during the April-February period of 2020-21 from ₹1,37,014 crore in the year earlier period. Despite COVID-19, balance of trade in agriculture has favourably increased to ₹1,32,579.69 crore from ₹93,907.76 crore in the said period, the ministry said in a statement.
“India has consistently maintained trade surplus in the agricultural products over the years. .Even during the difficult time of the pandemic, India took care not to disturb the world food supply chain and continued to export,” the ministry said. ....

Vietnam expects sharp rise in exports to US

HANOI (Vietnam News/ANN): Exports for the year as of March 15 were worth US$62.01 billion, a year-on-year increase of 22.7 per cent, according to the General Department of Vietnam Customs.
Exports to the US in the first two months of the year accounted for $13.83 billion or 28.4 per cent of total exports.
In recent years the US has become Vietnam s biggest market. Last year, for instance, at $76.4 billion it accounted for 27 per cent of the latter’s total exports.
Thân Đức Viet, general director of Garment 10 Joint Stock Company, said there were several factors behind Vietnam’s rapid growth in exports including to the US. ....

To check export of matters linking to nuke, WMDs: Cabinet okays powers to SECD

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Cabinet Tuesday approved the delegation of some powers to the Strategic Export Control Division (SECD) with a view to ensuring effective implementation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1540 about control on the export of goods, technology and instruments related to nuclear and biological weapons and more effective implementation of Pakistan’s commitment to check the spread of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs).
The move would enable the division to make timely decisions in that regard.
For bringing about administrative improvement in the Federal Medical Teaching Institutes and allied teaching hospitals, Federal Medical Teaching Institute Ordinance 2020 promulgated by the president had already been implemented in various institutions. ....

The second wave of the Covid pandemic has pulled down prices of Kraft paper, used in the packaging industry, by 10 per cent in last one month due to a sharp fall in demand.
The sector was limping back to normalcy after the onslaught of the pandemic last year. In fact, demand and prices started picking up in the second half of last year as the consumer goods industry focused on packaging, with concern on cleanliness taking centre stage.
However, the demand for kraft paper started weakening from late last month and prices started declining across the board. ....

ISLAMABAD: Ahmad Jawwad, an expert on horticulture exports, on Tuesday urged the government to take notice of Pakistan Horticulture Development Export Company’s (PHDEC) failure to play its due role in enhancing this sector’s exports and decide if it s worth it.
“To date the country has no export strategy for this emerging industry and Pakistan’s share in international market is meager,” said Ahmad Jawad, Vice President of Pakistan Businesses Forum and former chairman FPCCI Standing Committee on Agriculture in a statement. Jawad said according to 2015 IFPRI IMPACT projections, Russia’s demand for fruit would the fastest growing category in food demand, reaching $11.4 billion and same was true for China, which could be a tremendous opportunities for Pakistani fruits. ....
