A person has died after a vehicle crashed into a power pole in Kaitaia - the seventh to die on Northland s roads so far this month.
The death, on Friday night, was the seventh fatal crash in Northland in 23 days, and takes the region s road toll for 2021 to 14, compared to 13 at the same stage of 2020.
The death came just hours after Northland police urged people to be at their very best or stay off the road this Anzac Day holiday weekend. ....

A consistent third round at the ANA Inspiration hasn t been enough to see Lydia Ko keep pace with the leaders, as she sits in a tie for seventh with one round left to play.
Ko carded a one-under-par 71 in her penultimate round today, with two birdies and a bogey breaking up her 15 pars.
Heading into the day four shots behind leader Patty Tavatanakit, Ko would have wanted to produce something similar to her second-round 69 to move further into contention.
But while Ko performed consistently throughout her round, she ended the day eight shots behind Tavatanakit, who hit a five-under-par 67 to hold a five-shot lead over nearest rivals Ally Ewing and defending champion Mirim Lee. ....

Japanese Market Extending Gains Into Seventh Day
TOKYO (dpa-AFX) - The Japanese stock market is rising after early losses on Wednesday, with the benchmark Nikkei index moved above the 29,900 level, following inconclusive cues overnight from Wall Street as investors stayed cautious while they await Federal Reserve s policy announcement.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 Index is gaining 38.05 points or 0.13 percent to 29,959.14, after touching a low of 29,825.16 in early trades. Japanese stocks closed higher on Tuesday.
Market heavyweight SoftBank Group is declining more than 1 percent, while Uniqlo operator Fast Retailing is up almost 1 percent. Among automakers, Honda is losing more than 1 percent and Toyota is down almost 1 percent. ....
