Activist Groups Request Hearing Over Ginnie Springs Water Pumping Permit

Two groups filed a legal challenge Tuesday to the Florida Division of Administrative Hearings contesting the Seven Springs Water permit to pump nearly a million gallons daily for Nestle’s bottling services.
The petition contests the board’s decision on the grounds that Nestle can’t benefit from the permit as it is not an official applicant, and the board did not consider public interest in making the decision.
The challenge argues the permit’s applicant, Seven Springs Water Company, does not have the right to conduct water use under district law, as it does not have control over the bottling facility pumping water. Because Nestle is not the official permit applicant, the suit alleges, the district would have no way to regulate its water use operations to ensure they are used in a reasonable manner. ....

The Suwannee River Water Management District Tuesday voted unanimously to approve a permit allowing the Seven Springs Water Company to pump nearly a million gallons of water per day from Ginnie Springs to a nearby Nestlé bottling plant. Tuesday’s vote came after four hours of public comment calling for the permit to be denied.

In order to provide options for in-person and virtual attendance, the Suwannee River Management District moved the location of the Feb. 23 and 24 special meeting. The event was moved from the Suwannee River Fair Pavilion in Fanning Springs to the district headquarters in Live Oak.
The meeting surrounds the water bottling permit for Seven Springs Water Company, a company contracted by multinational corporation Nestlé, to take nearly one million gallons of water a day from Ginnie Springs. The Suwannee River Management District previously opposed the renewal of the bottling permit. On Jan. 22, a judge recommended renewing the company’s permit. ....
