Israel's IAI to Work With Lockheed Martin on Air Defense

A new partnership is on the horizon.
Israel Aerospace Industries, one of Israel’s three major defense giants, signed a memorandum of understanding with Lockheed Martin to cooperate on integrated air and missile defense systems. This is important because IAI has played a key role in Israeli air defense systems, from the Barak missiles to unique radar that is used with the Iron Dome system and radars being put on Israel’s new advanced Sa’ar 6-class warships. While Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, which makes the interceptors and Iron Dome system, works with Raytheon, the IAI partnership with Lockheed Martin represents a major step for Israel and U.S. defense giants.  ....

As the Army works toward modernizing its air-and-missile defense capabilities, the service is expanding efforts to develop joint systems that will be key to winning future battles.
The technology is one of the top modernization priorities being spearheaded by Army Futures Command. As part of its effort to bolster its capability, the service is combining offices and testing technologies with the other armed services to converge and streamline the process of building and integrating new platforms.
Maj. Gen. Robert Rasch Jr., program executive officer for missiles and space at Redstone Arsenal, said his office underwent a shake-up to support the military’s evolving multi-domain operations concept. ....

WASHINGTON: Raytheon will soon deliver the Army’s first “production readiness” model of the new LTAMDS radar, in time for key tests this summer. By next September (2022), the first six early-model LTAMDS should have passed initial Army testing. That will allow the Lower-Tier Air & Missile Defense Sensor, to use its formal name, to be approved for “Urgent Materiel Release” to Army missile defense units.
If Raytheon makes that deadline, it’ll have gone from initial contract award – in Oct. 2019 – to operational fielding in less than three years. That’s a remarkable pace for the Pentagon, made possible in large part by using the streamlined Other Transaction Authority process instead of traditional contracting regulations. ....

Updating The Fleet Faster

Consider it the military’s version of speed to market.
Military agencies are adopting some of the same software development techniques that commercial tech companies use to innovate and iterate quickly. And, they’re doing it not to boost sales, but to stay ahead of attacks that move faster than anything in the history of warfare.
“You don’t want to be deployed to the middle of the ocean and learn that there’s a new threat you aren’t prepared for,” said retired U.S. Navy Capt. Steve Lott, a former commanding officer of the guided missile cruisers USS Vincennes (CG-49) and USS Chosin (CG-65), and now a director of requirements and capabilities at Raytheon Missiles & Defense. ....
