Covid drains N$174m from NWR coffers - Tourism

WINDHOEK
While Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) battled one of the most difficult years in the tourism industry, the company made a loss of N$174 million during the 2019/2020 financial year.
NWR chairman Leonard Iipumbu said the significant milestone NWR reached by recording its first ever profit of N$22 million since the establishment of the organisation as well as other financial gains made in 2018/2019 were wiped out due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
He made these remarks at the company’s annual general meeting last week, which was held in compliance with the Public Enterprise Act.
During the meeting, the shareholder was represented by public enterprise minister Leon Jooste and the newly appointed deputy minister of tourism, Heather Sibungo. ....

A new park fee structure, that also includes conservation fees, has been gazetted and came into effect as from 1 April.
The environment ministry at the end of last year announced that new fees would come into effect at the beginning of this year, but this was, however, delayed by modalities that had to be put in place to ensure the efficient and smooth collection of fees without any inconvenience to visitors to the country’s national parks. ....

/Ai-/Ais Hotsprings and Spa closes due to extensive rain damage

The /Ai-/Ais Hotsprings and Spa has been closed temporarily after the resort experienced heavy rains and flash floods.

Robert Hailume, /Ai-/Ais Hotsprings and Spa Acting Resort Manager, narrated his experience and stated: “The rain was quite heavy and caused extensive damage to the resort and campsites. Though the resort experienced severe damage, I am grateful that all our clients that were camping that evening were successfully evacuated and are safe”.

In light of the damage to the resort and campsites, NWR had no other option but to temporarily close the resort to visitors for the next three months starting from 11 January 2021 until the end of March 2021. “We will soon commence with the repair work. This will ensure that the resort can begin to operate as soon as possible” says Dr Matthias Ngwangwama, NWR Managing Director. ....
