Federal aid could ease preschool losses from pandemic in Iowa

DES MOINES Republican senators are working with Gov. Kim Reynolds to direct federal money to cover a projected $7 million shortfall that hit Iowa preschools when enrollments dropped as parents kept their kids home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sen. Amy Sinclair, R-Allerton, chair of the Iowa Senate Education Committee, told a subcommittee meeting Tuesday she is working with the governor’s office to use federal early childhood dollars as part of a measure being formulated to provide one-time supplemental school funding to help districts that incurred costs related to the pandemic, the Aug. 10 derecho and other challenges.
The Senate amendment also would provide money to area education agencies that incurred COVID-19-related expenses while serving districts with in-person learning, she added. ....

Letter to the editor: Vouchers a bad 'choice' for Iowa schools

To the editor:
Can Iowa teachers take another punch to the gut this year? I’m not sure I’m going to be able to. As a 30-year veteran in the profession, there is no doubt that this has been the most challenging year of my teaching career. Three different learning modalities, adding considerable responsibilities to my teaching load in order to support online learners, trying to make sure my students stay healthy in my classroom it has all left me tired in a way that I have never been tired before.
But our governor and her Republican colleagues want to be sure and give us one more solid kick to the gut. They are bringing Iowa a program that has failed in state after state: private school vouchers. Plain and simple, vouchers take public dollars and put them in the pockets of private schools that are not accountable to the same rules and standards as public schools. ....

Bill seeks to end tenure at regent universities | News, Sports, Jobs

tbabcock@timesrepublican.com
A bill introduced in the Iowa Legislature this session seeks to end tenure in all public regent universities.
When a professor earns tenure it is considered a great honor, and tenured professors can only be terminated under extreme circumstances such as a severe financial crisis or a discontinuation of the professor’s program of study.
This is the third year in a row the bill has been proposed in the Iowa Legislature by Sen. Brad Zaun (R-Urbandale), but the bill has never made it to the Governor’s desk.
Proponents of the bill want more accountability for professors in Iowa’s public universities, while Iowa’s Board of Regents states tenure is “job security in order to create and maintain an atmosphere for the free exchange of ideas and inquiry necessary for educating Iowa’s students and advancing knowledge in democracy.” ....
