Barb Schwamman has been instrumental in a number of new initiatives and projects in her nearly six years as superintendent of schools for the Osage Community School District. And while those initiatives have made for some proud moments during her tenure in Osage and as the superintendent in Riceville (since 2017), they pale in comparison to seeing students succeed in the classroom.  That is absolutely the best thing about my job, Schwamman said. All kids learn at a different pace, so to help them and see them all make progress and succeed is why we get into this field. Schwamman will talk about helping students succeed in the classroom and the need for individualized education, among other things, as part of her keynote address at the 2021 Star Class recognition event on May 9 at North Iowa Area Community College. ....
MARY PIEPER Special to the Globe Gazette Lauren McWhorter, an LPN at Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake, was certified as an infection control specialist in March 2019. At the time she had no idea just how valuable that training would be. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit a year later, McWhorter became responsible for keeping the virus under control at the nursing home. She was in charge of COVID testing and reporting for Oakwood. McWhorter also helped implement the strategy on setting up an isolation area at the nursing home for those who were infected to keep them separated from the other residents. ....

North Iowa Area Community College held their graduation ceremony a bit different than usual, as four smaller ceremonies were held throughout the day on Friday, based on specialty (health, career technical and arts & sciences). In a way, Bella Flood says the pandemic helped a bit with her studies; the Charles City student had a lot of her classes online, which helped her save some gas money, and met in person for clinical experience and tests three times a week. However, there was a caveat when it came to practicing skills at home. ....

The College has been awarded a Volunteer Generation Fund (VGF) grant of $31,354 from the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service, the state agency that fosters civic engagement through service and volunteering. This funding provides the resources for the College to create a volunteer center on the NIACC campus and engage students in volunteer service throughout North Central Iowa. The goals of the NIACC Volunteer Center will be to connect students with opportunities to serve, increase the capacity of local organizations to engage volunteers in meaningful service, and promote volunteering. The center will support local nonprofit organizations in recruiting, managing, and retaining volunteers to address some of the area’s most pressing challenges. ....
