The top Democrat in the Iowa House is stepping down from his leadership role, he announced Wednesday.
Rep. Todd Prichard, D-Charles City, said in a statement that he is leaving his role as House minority leader.
It s been a great honor to serve as leader of the Iowa House Democrats the last three years, Prichard said in the statement. After conversations with my family, it s time for me to step aside and allow a new member of our caucus to lead. ....

ANAMOSA, Iowa (KWWL)- Iowa Democratic state and federal leaders are calling for a federal investigation into the deadly attack at the Anamosa State Penitentiary in March.
In a letter to US Attorney General Merrick Garland and US Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh, Rep. Cindy Axne, D-Iowa 3, Iowa House Minority Leader Todd Prichard, and Iowa Senate Minority Leader Zach Wahls called for an independent investigation.

Three of Iowa’s top Democrats are requesting a federal probe into the state’s prison system in response to the killings of two Anamosa State Penitentiary employees.
Meanwhile on Tuesday, Gov. Kim Reynolds and state officials, through the state s bidding process, formally requested an outside review of safety and security at the Iowa Department of Corrections. The request should be publicly posted Wednesday, according to the governor s office.
The inquiries come about a month after correctional officer Robert MacFarland and prison nurse Lorena Schulte were allegedly killed by two prisoners during a failed escape attempt on March 23.
