Minister Hackett’s Forestry Policy Group meets for fourth time

The fourth meeting of the national Forestry Policy Group took place today. Chaired by the Minister of State for Land Use and Biodiversity, Senator Pippa Hackett, the meeting was convened to monitor progress on the implementation of Project Woodland, which she established earlier this year, to review and implement national forest policy.
Expressing satisfaction at what the members of the Forestry Policy Group heard at the meeting today the Minister said,

Minister of State Pippa Hackett has announced the four chairpersons of the Project Woodland working groups, following a meeting with the project board, chaired by Brendan Gleeson. The board oversees the delivery of Jo O’Hara’s Implementation of the Mackinnon Report.
Stressing the need for urgency, the minister said: “The project board agreed that the working groups should convene immediately to agree deliverables and project milestones.”
The working groups examine key issues identified by O’Hara. Forestry licence approvals well down on Department targets

Since late 2019, forestry licences issued by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine have decreased, leading to a dramatic fall in afforestation, harvesting and roading programmes.
As a result, forestry companies have laid off staff and sawmills have increased log imports to fill the timber shortfall. In addition, some harvesting contractors are out of work and since 2019, nurseries began exporting plants originally intended for the Irish afforestation programme.
Legislative changes, increased Department staffing of foresters and ecologists as well as increased resources to the Forestry Appeals Committee (FAC) towards the end of last year raised expectations that the forestry programme could be brought back on track in 2021, especially as licence appeals have become more manageable. ....
