On the eve of World Cancer Day in February, the European Commission announced an ambitious roadmap to beat cancer and it was very pleasant music to my ears.
The European Beating Cancer Plan comes into sharper focus in the coming days as member states mark the European Week Against Cancer and concentrate on its implementation.
The plan seeks to target the disease pathway comprehensively, including prevention and early detection as its key action areas. The other key action areas are diagnosis and treatment, and the quality of life of cancer patients and survivors.
The age-old adage maintains that prevention is better than cure it is also the most cost-efficient, long-term cancer control strategy. Research shows that almost 50 per cent of cancer cases in the EU are preventable, and we all have a part to play. ....

S&Ds: Commission's Beating Cancer Plan a positive step towards EU Health Union but needs more ambition

FollowingÂ the CommissionâsÂ adoption of the European Beating Cancer PlanÂ today, the Socialists and Democrats Group expressedÂ their support for this initial positive step, calling for reinforced co-ordination andÂ sharedÂ research among member states to ensure all citizens in the EU can rely on effective andÂ high-qualityÂ treatment andÂ care.
The S&D co-ordinator in the beating cancer committee, Alessandra MorettiÂ MEP, stated:
âAs progressives we have been at the forefront calling for a European Health UnionÂ to be created. As progressives, we are happy to see that the EU Commission aims at making the Beating Cancer Plan one of the mainÂ toolsÂ in theÂ fight against one of the leading causesÂ of death in the European Union, with a renewed, co-ordinated and more efficient approach. ....
