Slovenia's EU Presidency must not obstruct efforts to improve media freedom in Europe

Prime Minister Janez Janša and his government have repeatedly shown disregard for media freedom. Organisations defending press freedom and journalists call on the Slovenian government to commit to refraining from attempts to undermine initiatives aimed at improving the situation of press freedom in EU member and candidate countries during the EU Presidency. We ask the other EU member states to remain vigilant.

On May 18, Mozambican Head Filipe Nyusi met French President Emmanuel Macron, CEO of French oil firm Total, and Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa, the current President of the European Union (EU) Council, in Paris, to discuss support for Mozambique’s security forces in taming the insurgency in the northern Cabo Delgado region.
Portugal is supporting the EU engagement in northern Mozambique’s unrest province. Following the meeting, Portuguese Prime Minister Costa offered Portugal’s assistance for “stopping this crisis” during Portugal’s leadership of the Council, as well as “full solidarity with the Mozambican people in this struggle against terrorism, which is a global issue.” In response, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi remarked that “terrorism cannot be defeated on its own” and that “Mozambique has never refused assistance.” ....

Year in Review 2020: COVID-19 sends business and economy into tailspin

The year 2020 started out on a high for many businesses in Barbados, with soaring expectations and plans for several projects.
Despite starting the year with an economic decline, Government was also optimistic about several key development projects getting started, and favourable economic growth.
Then came the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and expectations were immediately lowered, hopes dashed and new plans emerged.
Shortly after the pandemic started affecting the island, rising debt and overall decline in the economy quickly became the order of the day as the Government was forced to borrow more and spend more to implement several social protection programmes and business support schemes, even as revenues declined. ....
