May 30, 2021 Share On May 18, Mozambican Head Filipe Nyusi met French President Emmanuel Macron, CEO of French oil firm Total, and Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa, the current President of the European Union (EU) Council, in Paris, to discuss support for Mozambique’s security forces in taming the insurgency in the northern Cabo Delgado region. Portugal is supporting the EU engagement in northern Mozambique’s unrest province. Following the meeting, Portuguese Prime Minister Costa offered Portugal’s assistance for “stopping this crisis” during Portugal’s leadership of the Council, as well as “full solidarity with the Mozambican people in this struggle against terrorism, which is a global issue.” In response, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi remarked that “terrorism cannot be defeated on its own” and that “Mozambique has never refused assistance.”
