Commercial Radio was the ‘gold rush’ of the late 1980s, and everyone and anyone wanted a piece of the action. There were rock stars, impresarios, lawyers, sportsmen, public relations gurus, stockbrokers and socialites, all prospecting for a licence to print money.
These licences, awarded by the Independent Radio & Television Commission (IRTC), were cheap and they held the promise of easy money for the influential, the fortune and the favoured. The reality turned out to be a little different. The road to radio riches was eventually littered with casualties, but only after the initial euphoria had worn off.
The way it worked was that the ‘movers and shakers’ formed themselves into competing groups, appeared before hearings in the National Concert Hall in Dublin and eventually the licences were doled out. If you weren’t involved you weren’t really a player in the Dublin financial/entertainment scene of the time. ....

STATE COMPENSATION PAYMENTS to victims of contaminated blood products passed by the €1 billion milestone in 2019.
That is according to the 2019 annual report of the Hepatitis C and HIV Compensation Tribunal which confirms one victim of contaminated blood products received almost €1 million in compensation in 2019.
The new report shows that compensation payments to victims of the contaminated blood products totalled €1.003 billion at the end of 2019.
The total is made up of €751.6 million in awards made by the tribunal; €87.4 million in awards ....

Compensation to victims of contaminated blood passed €1bn

State compensation payments to victims of contaminated blood products passed by the €1bn milestone in 2019.
That is according to the 2019 annual report of the Hepatitis C and HIV Compensation Tribunal which confirmed one victim of contaminated blood products received almost €1m in compensation in 2019.
The new report said compensation payments to victims of the contaminated blood products totalled €1.003bn at the end of 2019.
The total is made up of €751.6m in awards made by the tribunal, €87.4m in awards made by the High Court on appeal and a further €164.8m in reparation fund payments.
In 2019, the tribunal paid out €8m in awards including one totalling €970,000. ....
