The destruction of St. John Cantius Church on Hawley Street would be a sin.
This is a significant building, over 100 years old. It’s beautiful. It tells a story of our city’s past. It’s right in the middle of an important historic neighborhood with historic structures on Bridge Street, Phillips Place and Pomeroy Terrace. The culture, the work, the history, the diversity of our past are all here to see in this building. It is too important to rush to destroy.
The community should be given time to explore reuses of the church. O’Connell Development sought permission to destroy the church at the hearing last month of the Central Business Architecture Committee, but O’Connel’s representatives made it clear that they had not explored some very obvious resources for preservation, like historic tax credits. HATFIELD The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts will be moving from its longtime headquarters in Hatfield to a new location in Chicopee.
The Food Bank in December acquired 16.5 acres of vacant land at the Chicopee River Business Park, at the corner of East Main and Carew streets, from Westmass Area Development Corp., for $449,235, with the intent to move to a newly constructed building there in the next year or two following a capital campaign. The nonprofit organization serves Hamsphire, Hampden, Franklin and Berkshire counties. ....

NORTHAMPTON A growing Seventh-Day Adventist congregation based in Florence bought the former Blessed Sacrament Church at 354 Elm St. for $455,000.
The transaction, recorded at the Hampshire County Registry of Deeds Dec. 30, doesn’t include the rectory next door. But that property, still listed in city records as owned by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield, is no longer listed for sale. ....
