A camel auction in the western Queensland channel country has attracted interest from buyers as far away as Victoria, with seven mobs selling for more than $250 a head.

15 camels seized at Pakur-Bengal border, 9 smugglers arrested | Ranchi News

Dumka: In a second major crackdown in a month, the forest department of Pakur district seized 15 camels crammed inside two trucks and arrested nine persons of an interstate gang on Tuesday late night at the Jharkhand-Bengal border. The arrested were handed over to police and later sent to jail.
Pakur forest division’s range officer Anil Kumar Singh said, “The camels were being transported to Bangladesh via West Bengal for their meat. When the trucks were seized at Gokulpur check post, we found four of the animals had died, probably due to suffocation. The rest of the camels were handed over to a committee working in the field of prevention of cruelty to animals.” ....

A study has revealed that a number of camels have died after foraging plastics they had mistaken for food outside Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates.

The dromedary camels, in their large numbers, have been foraging on desert trash including plastics, on the outskirts of Dubai in the UAE. The study reveals that 1 in 100 camels die as a result of foraging on plastics. The plastic bags and trash they ingest accumulate in their stomachs and form masses known as polybexoars.

Two plastic pollution experts met in the Arabian Gulf, in the UAE. Markus Eriksen was studying plastic pollution when he met Ulrich Wernery, a camel expert. Immediately, Wernery asked Eriksen to follow him since he wanted to see the plastics. The two went on an expedition deep into the desert. Not quite long, they sighted a camel s skeleton on the ground. ....
