The State Election Commission (SEC) has rescheduled the first phase of gram panchayat (GP) elections on the ground that the process initiated by it on January 23 has been vitiated.
The first phase of elections was to be originally held on February 5. It has been postponed to February 21. Nominations for this phase are to be filed from February 10 to 12.
The schedule of the other phases remains intact (dates of polling February 9, 13 and 17 for which nominations have to be filed from January 29 to 31, February 2 to 4 and February 6 to 8 respectively) but they have become the first, second and third phases respectively. ....

KARACHI: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has deferred automated assessment of tax returns till June this year as its online system is not ready to scrutinise taxable income and payable taxes, sources said on Wednesday.
The FBR accepted returns filed for the tax year 2020 without automated examination as its online system is yet to be updated.
Since the FBR did not introduce required changes in the online system all the returns were accepted without examination, according to the sources.
Last year the government brought to an end two-decade old self-assessment scheme through a new section (120(2A)) inserted into the Income Tax Ordinance 2001 under which a return filed by a taxpayer is to be processed through the automated system to arrive at correct amounts of taxable income and tax payable. ....

JALANDHAR: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has deferred appearance of Khalsa Aid India team in connection with case registered at Delhi by NIA on December 15, 2020 against Sikhs For Justice under stringent provisions of law, including UAPA and sedition.
Khalsa India director Amarpreet Singh said he was earlier asked to appear on Monday while another person from their team was to appear on Tuesday, but on Sunday he was informed that there was rush at NIA office and would be informed later about his appearance. “I received a call from an NIA official who said that they would call us later,” Amarpreet told TOI. ....

LAHORE: A special court for Control of Narcotics Substance Saturday deferred the indictment of former law minister Punjab Rana Sanaullah, an accused of trafficking 15-kilogram heroin.
The indictment was due for Saturday. However, the counsel for Rana Sana informed the court that statements of witnesses against his client had yet not been provided to him. After which, the court adjourned the hearing till Jan 11.
Rana Sana was arrested by the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) and an FIR [first information report] was registered against him.
The ANF claimed that it had received a tip-off that the vehicle of Rana Sana was carrying a heavy quantity of drugs after which a raid was conducted. The FIR further stated that when the ANF officials intercepted his vehicle, he and his guards indulged in a scuffle with them. ....
