ATU fights to save apprenticeship, and win back the right to strike

Amalgamated Transit Union Local 757 is asking the Oregon Legislature to give public transit workers the right to strike again. Under Oregon’s public employee collective bargaining law, they used to have that right, but in 2007 at the union’s urging lawmakers moved transit workers into the same public safety category as police and firefighters. Forbidden to strike, they have their contracts decided by a neutral arbitrator if union and employer can’t agree.
“What we’ve seen since then is that it wasn’t a perfect fit,” says Local 757 Executive Board member Bill Bradley. A Lane Transit District maintenance worker, Bradley is taking a leave of absence to lobby for SB 690, a bill introduced by State Sen. Chris Gorsek (D-Troutdale) that would restore the right to strike. ....

Chatham Area Transit union 'flabbergasted' by CEO Mauldin's termination

For the last decade, members of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1324 (ATU), which represents Chatham Area Transit (CAT) drivers, had been looking for engagement and transparency within the organization.
When Bacarra Mauldin took over as CEO in June 2020, union officials said she was not only transparent, but let their voices be heard.
“She basically gave us a seat at every table, meaning we were included on leadership calls within the company. She was very transparent with us and we had been looking for that for years. A lot of times, we didn t know what was going on within the company,” said Courtney Wingster, president of ATU Local 1324, which represents nearly 130 CAT employees. ....

WINNIPEG A councillor is pushing the City of Winnipeg to study all options in the potential creation of a supervised consumption site, despite the province’s refusal to back such centres.

WINNIPEG A councillor is pushing the City of Winnipeg to study all options in the potential creation of a supervised consumption site, despite the province’s refusal to back such centres.
Coun. Sherri Rollins raised a motion Thursday, calling for the city to explore funding, partnership and implementation alternatives to establish a low-barrier, supervised drug consumption site.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - We continue to follow a big shake-up at Chatham Area Transit that those within the organization and in the community say was sudden and surprising.
And thatâs the termination of now former CAT CEO Bacarra Mauldin.
According to the president of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1324, members are not happy at all. And theyâre letting the CAT Board of Directors know it.
âTotal and utter shock. And then I think we went from being shocked to being disgusted,â said Courtney Wingster, President, ATU Local 1324. ....
