I am an unusual head of a regulatory organisation. After over five years at the helm of ONR, steering it through change, challenge and COVID, I am writing this piece as my last public record of something critical to this sector. And I hope it will move you enough to engage your teams.

Hunterston B cleared for six months of operation : Regulation & Safety

The UK s Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) has today provided EDF with permission for Reactors 3 and 4 at the Hunterston nuclear power plant in North Ayrshire, Scotland to return to service for a limited period of operation. This will be the power station’s final period of operation before moving into the defueling phase.

Permission for the restart, which ONR says follows extensive scrutiny of EDF’s safety case, is for up to a total of 16.7 terawatt days for Reactor 3 and 16.52 terawatt days for Reactor 4 - about six months of operation for each reactor. The ONR’s assessment focused on whether cracking observed in the graphite bricks that form the reactor core could compromise the key nuclear safety requirements. ....

Dome in place at second Fangchenggang Hualong One : New Nuclear

The dome has been installed on the containment building of unit 4 at the Fangchenggang nuclear power plant in western China. The unit is the second of two demonstration Hualong One (HPR1000) reactors being built by China General Nuclear (CGN) at the site in the Guangxi Autonomous Region, about 45 kilometres from the border with Vietnam.

The operation to install the dome - measuring 45 meters in diameter and almost 14m in height, and weighing about 260 tonnes - began at 7:58am on 27 January and was completed two hours later, China s National Nuclear Safety Administration (NNSA), which oversaw the work, said in a statement today. ....

IAEA concludes virtual mission to assess safety in Lithuania : Regulation & Safety

Lithuania has strengthened its regulatory framework for nuclear and radiation safety in recent years, an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) team of experts has concluded. The Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) team yesterday completed a 17-day virtual follow-up mission to review the country s implementation of recommendations and suggestions made during an initial IRRS mission in 2016.
