LUBRICANTS for the marine environment are subjected to very specific and often harsh conditions. They therefore need to be designed for their specific applications to ensure they are effective and safe.
Callum Ford, National Marketing Manager at Lubrication Engineers (LE) South Africa, says that typical marine applications include wire ropes, moving chains and cable parts. He stresses that using non-toxic products is also important for preserving marine life.
“People tend to think that biodegradable is the same as non-toxic to marine life, and that’s not always the case,” he explains. “While environmentally friendly lubricants have long aimed to be biodegradable, the EarthwiseTM range supplied by LE is specifically focused on also being non-toxic. For example, LE’s Earthwise EAL Wire Rope Grease (3353) is a certified environmentally acceptable lubricant and is recommended for use in applications ....

Consultation on bottom trawling in Marine Protected Areas welcomed by Marine Conservation Society

A consultation launched by the UK’s Marine Management Organisation has been welcomed by the Marine Conservation Society.
The MMO has launched the consultation to explore whether bottom towed fishing activity should be prohibited in four Marine Protected Areas where there is evidence they harm wildlife or damage habitats.
Earlier this year the Marine Conservation Society released its 
Marine unProtected Areas report which found that bottom towed fishing gear was being used in almost all of the UK’s protected areas designated specifically to safeguard the seabed. As a result, the charity called for a ban on bottom trawling in these areas intended to protect the seabed. The consultation is a positive step in the right direction. ....

New Chair appointed to Joint Nature Conservation Committee


Defra Ministers have appointed Professor Colin Galbraith as Chair of the Joint Nature Conservation Committee.
Colin Galbraith’s appointment is for three years and will run from 25 January 2021 to 24 January 2024. Remuneration is £40,059 per annum based on a time commitment of 2.5 days per week.
Professor Colin Galbraith is the Director of his own environmental consultancy, which deals with a range of environmental issues in the UK and at the global level. Colin has been Deputy Chairman of the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) from 2017 and Independent member of the Committee since 2014. Until early 2010, Colin was the Director of Policy and Advice in Scottish Natural Heritage (now NatureScot). In this capacity he was the principal adviser on policy, scientific and technical matters for the organisation for over 12 years. ....
