‘Deeply damaging’: Courts rule against challenge to new UK VAT rules

The UK High Court has rules against a legal challenge brought by members of the travel retail industry against the changes to tax-free shopping laws in the country
“The Treasury has baked-in a competitive disadvantage for UK tourism by making this the only country in Europe not to offer tax-free shopping.”
That was the reaction from travel retail industry leaders after the UK’s High Court and Court of Appeal blocked a legal challenge against the country’s new duty-free laws.

Dixons Travel stores are set to close in the wake of the pandemic and changes to the
UK’s duty free laws.
Dixons Carphone, the parent company of Dixons Travel, announced it will close the 35 Dixons Travel outlets, which historically contributed more than £20m to the company’s annual profit.
The move comes following the loss of shopper traffic during the pandemic, with recovery expected to take some time. It is also a direct result of the UK Government’s decision to change tax-free shopping rules following the UK’s departure from the EU on 1 January. ....
