Speech and Language Development Center partners with Orange County Community Foundation for "Empowering Possibilities" Giving Day


Speech and Language Development Center (SLDC) and 9 aligned nonprofits will partner with the Orange County Community Foundation (OCCF) on May 20 for Empowering Possibilities, a collaborative Giving Day to support people with disabilities living in Orange County. The 24-hour online effort aims to raise $100,000 for 10 nonprofits offering a range of education and supportive services, skills training and counseling, and community outreach programs.
Within Orange County, there are over 250,000 people living with disabilities, making up 8.5% of the community2. This Giving Day is an opportunity for donors to collectively support the nonprofit organizations providing the tools and resources necessary for Orange County’s disabled residents to achieve success and independence. At SLDC, we provide education and therapy to children and adults with special needs in an environment that nutures growth, inspires achievement and maximizes their potential. United Cerebral Palsy Association of the North Country to receive $2 million in federal bailout funds

CANTON The Community Health Center of the North Country, Inc., in Canton is slated to receive $2,188,500 in federal bailout funding.
According to a press release from the offices of senators Charles E. Schumer and Kristen Gillibrand, the Community Health Center is one of 63 community health centers across the state who will receive a total of $396,801,375 through the “American Rescue Plan.”
The money will help expand COVID-19 vaccination, testing, and treatment for underserved populations.
Specifically, the funding will deliver needed preventive and primary health care services to those at higher risk for COVID-19; expand CHC operational capacity during the pandemic and beyond, including modifying and improving physical infrastructure and adding mobile units. ....

When Karen Killilea was born in 1940, she was three months premature and weighed less than two pounds. She spent her first nine months in a neonatal intensive care unit.
When she finally returned to the family home in Rye, New York, her parents noticed that her limbs were especially stiff, she never rolled over in her crib and she didn’t reach for toys that were dangled in front of her. Babies born so early rarely survived in those days. The doctors told Karen’s parents to institutionalize her and get on with their lives. ....
