At least 15 House members have signed HJR 37 but authors representing the Makabayan bloc expect more congressmen to support its adoption. Hog raisers and agriculture stakeholders issued a statement on the issue which they submitted to the Lower House and the Senate. In the statement, they urged legislators to “repeal EO 128” and recall the move to increase by 350,000 metric tons the Minimum Access Volume on pork. ....

According to Maki Pulido’s report on “24 Oras, the African swine fever left the country with fewer hogs from 12.8 million in January 2020 to 9.7 million in January 2021. The Philippine Statistics Authority also said that the country s broiler inventory had gone down to 53.27 million, the lowest in 11 years. With the Rice Tariffication Law which lifted limits on importation, PSA figures showed that the farmgate price of palay or unmilled rice had gone down to P16 per kilo. ....

Speaking in an online medium forum, the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP), the United Broilers Association (UBRA), and the Samahan ng Industriya at Agrikultura (SINAG) were one in opposing the government’s importation policy. “The DA always resorts to importation as a default fix-it-all but this is not the viable long-term solution to problems on the production, supply, and demand side of food production,” said KMP leader Rafael Mariano. ....
