LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - It has been several months since Louisiana was hit by two back-to-back hurricanes, and locals are still picking up the pieces these storms left behind. A local non-profit organization is lifting a burden off of the shoulders of those who need it most.
United Way of Southwest Louisiana provided hot meals, water and groceries to locals affected by recent hurricanes. This time, they are providing eligible families with an even bigger blessing: furniture for their homes. ....

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) -The efforts by United Way of Southwest Louisiana continues as they help locals who lost water, furniture and even their homes to the weather events that have plagued Southwest Louisiana in the last year.
Hundreds of cars lined up and waited for hours to receive free groceries donated and to the local nonprofit.
“It’s beautiful they’ve done a great fantastic job for those that don’t have …since the snowstorm and all the hurricanes,” said resident Michael Narcisse. ....

The United Way of Southwest Louisiana has been helping our community for the past eight decades. In those eighty years many of us, myself included, have given money, time, energy, and attention to the causes that the United Way helps to support. While our donations are the backbone of the mission, a donation like the one that was announced yesterday will certainly enhance the agency s ability to do good for the next several years.
A donation of $5 million dollars, yes, $5 million dollars, was announced Tuesday by author and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. Our local United Way as well as two other Louisiana United Way agencies each received donations. It s estimated that Scott has generously donated over $4 billion across the country over the past few years. ....
