Okaloosa businesses say stimulus, unemployment have gutted workforce

It is a phenomenon with its roots in the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. Many businesses were forced to shut down and send employees home, and the federal government began providing funds to supplement state unemployment checks.
Florida was one of the first states to reopen, and business owners eager to turn a profit and recoup losses rushed to beef up their work force and return to normalcy.
But with other states slower to open, stimulus dollars continued to flow from the U.S. Treasury. Even though federal unemployment insurance payments have been cut from $600 to $300, a Floridian who qualifies for maximum state benefits of $275 still can make $575 a week. ....

The monthly relief amount per qualifying applicant is determined by the rent payment agreed to in the applicant s lease, according to a grant program frequently asked questions sheet.
Applicants may apply for back rent owed back to March 13, 2020, as well as up to three months of upcoming rent at one time. For example, you can apply in April 2021 and the application could cover April, May, and June 2021 rent AND any back rent you owe, the FAQ sheet said. This program can cover up to a maximum of 15 months of your rent.
Funding is available for past-due rental and utility assistance from April 2020 to the present. ....

United Way Emerald Coast helped almost 32,000 people in the COVID crisis

Since then, individuals and families across the region who were financially impacted by COVID-19 turned to UWEC and its nonprofit partner agencies to provide them with critical services and basic needs such as food, stable housing and medical care.
Starting with a donation of $125,000 from the Gulf Power Foundation, UWEC’s COVID-19 relief fund raised a total of $318,888 that was distributed to 20 local nonprofits providing rent, utility and mortgage assistance; emergency food and shelter; health care; and child care.

New manager in Fort Walton Beach starts work at One Hopeful Place shelter

Gabbert previously served as a social work consultant and stability specialist with the Homelessness and Housing Alliance, where his tasks included partnering with the Fort Walton Beach Police Department to find housing for homeless people.
His previous jobs also included serving as lead case manager, housing coordinator and grant manager for the Gateway Community Service Board in Brunswick, Georgia; city manager and chief municipal finance officer for the city of South Fulton, Tennessee; and as a rehabilitation and skilled nursing facility administrator, mostly in Tennessee.
