GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Evolutionary arms races between marine animals overhauled ocean ecosystems on scales similar to the mass extinctions triggered by global disasters, a new study shows.
Scientists at Umeå University in Sweden and the Florida Museum of Natural History used paleontological databases to build a multilayered computer model of the history of marine life over the last 500 million years. Their analysis of the fossil record closely echoed a seminal 1981 study by paleontologist J. John Sepkoski - with one key difference. ....

Study: Cold Climate and Temperate Region are Redefined by the Distribution of Vertebrate Animals

Close
The dispersion of vegetation is regularly used to categorize climate areas globally, still whether these areas are suitable for other organisms is unknown. Umeå experimenters have verified climate area based on the distribution of vertebrate species in recent research released by eLife.
They discovered that while elevated energy climate regions are alike across the plant and vertebrate groups, there are huge distinctions in cold and temperate climates.
Climate specifies how living organisms across the globe understand which climatic conditions propel key change in the ecosystem is vital to understand and foresee how life functions unfold.

Toyota Research Institute launches collaboration with Illinois, other academic institutions

1/26/2021
The Toyota Research Institute (TRI) announced today that it has selected 13 additional academic institutions to participate in the next five year phase of its collaborative research program. These universities join MIT, Stanford and the University of Michigan which have worked with TRI over the last five years to expand the body of research into artificial intelligence (AI) with the goal of amplifying the human experience.
The next five year phase includes investing more than $75 million in the academic institutions, making it one of the largest collaborative research programs by an automotive company in the world.
Eric Krotkov
“Our first five year program pushed the boundaries of exploratory research across multiple fields, generating 69 patent applications and nearly 650 papers,” said Eric Krotkov, TRI Chief Science Officer who leads the university research program. “Our next five years are about pushing even further and doing so with a broader, ....
