Marti Deyo is still moving into her new position and office at the Malheur Extension Office, but on Friday was busy preparing for a planning session with local 4-H leaders.
Deyo, 39, took over the position of 4-H program coordinator/youth development, for the Oregon State University Extension Service in Maheur County on Feb. 15. Already, she is planning an assessment with 4-H leaders, members, 4-H alumni and other members of the community to discuss needs in the program and in the community to plan the direction of the program.
Born and raised in Orofino, Idaho, Deyo said she was involved in 4-H as a club member for nine years and was involved in just about every 4-H project there was at the time, except animals. One year she had 13 projects, she said. ....

Ranitha Gnanarajah, a Sri Lankan lawyer and civil activist, has been included in this year s list of 14 International Courageous Women award presented annually by the US State Department.
On Monday, March 8, at 10:00 a.m., Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken will host the annual International Women of Courage (IWOC) Awards virtual ceremony to honor a group of extraordinary women from around the world, including an honorary award for seven women leaders and activists from Afghanistan who were assassinated for their dedication to improving the lives of Afghans.

The problem of the Madras Air Base was carried a good step further toward satisfactory solution Monday night, when a joint meeting of the City Council of Madras and the County Court of Jefferson County was attended by representatives of the U.S. Reclamation Bureau, irrigation district and citizens of the city and surrounding community and the session was ended with adoption of a joint resolution of the council and court requesting a joint sponsorship of the air base.
The adoption of the joint sponsorship resolution carried, following considerable discussion but without a dissenting voice, was the sequel of meetings held here last week between various local interests and Ray N. Harper, representative of the Civil Aeronautics authority, here from Seattle. ....

In 2019, Oregon sees spike in suicide rates across all ages, but youth deaths decline

Oregon had the nationâs ninth highest suicide rate across all ages in 2019 â a significant difference from the year before when the state was 17th in suicide deaths, according to suicide mortality data published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The state had 20.4 deaths by suicide per 100,000 people in 2019 â the same rate as Idaho â with a total of 906 deaths. In 2018, the suicide death rate was 19 per 100,000, which amounted to 844 total deaths. Oregon was ranked 15th in the nation in suicide deaths in 2017, when its rate had also been 19 deaths per 100,000, which amounted to 825 total deaths. The 2019 change in ranking is due to several factors, including a 2.1% decrease in suicide deaths nationwide and increased suicide rates in Oregon. ....
