Friday, May 14, 2021 The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office identified the two victims in Monday’s fatal shooting in Martindale as two teenagers. James Melgar, 18, and Adian Zulaica, 17, were identified as the teenagers killed Monday night in a shooting near Northwest River Road and Scull Road in Martindale. Officials also identified the suspects involved in the deadly shooting as Michael Adam Morris, 29, and Olivia Oliva, 29. Both have been charged with capital murder. On Monday, the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call regarding gunfire near the area of Northwest River Road and Scull Road at approximately 9:04 p.m. Sheriff’s deputies arrived and found two males laying next to a vehicle with gunshot wounds. ....
The process of even just discussing a change to Seaman Unified School District 345’s name will cost at least $30,000 and could cost as much as $70,000 to get started. The Seaman Board of Education on Monday approved a contract with the Kansas Leadership Center to help assist in the district’s name change discussion, which comes months after student journalists at Seaman High School first confirmed long-held rumors that district namesake and pioneer Fred A. Seaman was also a leader in the Topeka chapter of the Ku Klux Klan. The Kansas Leadership Center contract, which was approved in the board’s consent agenda, stipulates that the contract’s $30,000 base amount would go toward creating the advisory committee, providing introduction to the leadership center’s framework, and holding three retreats for group discussion on a potential name change. ....
