WEEK five of Lockdown 3. The percentage of children in school hovers around 16%. It was slightly above the national (England) average but that has crept up to the same figure. Infection rates are falling but still higher than in November, during Lockdown 2.
There continues to be a lot of talk in the national media about the impact of remote learning on “disadvantaged” pupils. In other words, the thinking is that the attainment gap is growing. Changes in funding rules will not help this. Up until this year the Pupil Premium Grant (the additional money schools receive, principally based on the number of children on roll who are registered for free school meals, to accelerate the progress of the disadvantaged pupils) was calculated using numbers from the January census.
